Recently, a legislative concept known as the Oregon Aquaculture Act (LC 3132) was put forth for consideration by the Interim Oregon State Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Wildfire Recovery by two groups, Animal Equality and Mercy for Animals, groups that are in general opposition to animal agriculture. These two groups’ organizational goals are explicitly stated on their websites at www.mercyforanimals.org and www.animalequality.org.
Oregon Aquaculture Association (OAA) is concerned about this proposed legislation as we view it as misleading, unfounded, unnecessary, and, if implemented, work that could significantly harm the development of and investment in the aquaculture sector. We have raised our concerns to the committee through this letter. If you would like to see the short presentation made to the committee on December 8th, please follow the below link to the committee hearing below, with the relevant aquaculture discussion beginning at 1 hour and 31 minutes: https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/mediaplayer/?clientID=4879615486&eventID=2022121010 We feel it is necessary to present a concerted and unified front to ensure that the committee and other decision-makers have a science-based picture of the aquaculture landscape.
