APHIS Seeking Aquaculture Veterinary Medical Officer

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is seeking a Veterinary Medical Officer working in Veterinary Services (VS) Strategy and Policy's (S&P) Aquaculture, Swine, Equine and Poultry Health Center (ASEP) Unit to develop, monitor, and implement aquaculture health program policies that support the VS mission and provide technical expertise to support the aquaculture health commodity.  The position opportunity will close March 21, 2023 or when 50 applications are received.

Duties
The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Develops laws, regulations, and policies related to complex scientific programs that support aquaculture and guide Federal field organizations, cooperative agencies, and private industry.
• Helps to develop and administer aquatic health programs by providing expert scientific advice, helping establish benchmarks for field operational performance, and evaluating the conduct of programs.
• Investigates and evaluates aquatic disease detections and coordinates disease response with VS field operations, state, and federal animal health officials.
• Identifies and evaluates emerging critical problems or evidence of possible aquatic foreign disease outbreaks and consults with other leading scientific staff members to address issues.
• Serves as a technical expert to aquaculture industry and government at various levels in regulatory processes and program methodology associated with the designated area of specialization.
• Provides authoritative medical opinions and regulatory guidance in unique or controversial situations encountered by APHIS field operational staff engaged in aquaculture program activities.
• Writes informational materials and instructions for administering aquaculture related programs, and prepares scientific papers or reports in the assigned specialization.
• Develops and maintains contacts with aquaculture researchers and industry members throughout the United States to keep abreast of research findings relating to aquatic health, as needed.
