Presenters

Clinton Bentz, President OAA, Blue Den Ranch

• Clinton J. Bentz is a CPA, CMA for Boldt, Carlisle & Smith, LLC, primarily providing professional tax, estate planning and business consulting serving the special needs of agricultural and timber clients.  He manages his 25 acre tree farm and 700-acre family tree partnership at Blue Den Ranch where Clint raises trout for pond stocking and for flyfishing.  Recently, Clint was honored by Governor Kulongoski for his participation in salmon recovery.

James Bowman, Aquaculture Specialist, OSU Department of Fisheries & Wildlife

• Jim has degrees in aquaculture from Auburn University and Oregon State University, and has been involved in aquacultural work in Southeast Asia, the southeastern US, the Caribbean, and Africa since 1970. He has training and experience in pond site evaluation, pond construction, soil/water interactions in ponds, and pond management, both for research/production ponds and for watershed/recreational ponds. Jim came to OSU as a graduate student in 1984 and has been a member of the faculty of the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife since 1994.

Paul Pedone, State Geologist, Natural Resources Conservation Service

• Paul has been a state geologist with Natural Resources Conservation Service for 34 years. He has investigated many pond sites in various locations throughout the United States.

John A. Falk, Dam Safety Coordinator, State of Oregon

• For the past 13 years, Mr. Falk has served as the Dam Safety Coordinator for the State of Oregon’s safety of dams program.  In this position John is responsible for performing design review and approval for new construction, and supervises the inspection of over 1200 of Oregon’s existing dams and reservoirs.  He also maintains the National Dam Inventory and provides support to the Water Resources Department for all water right issues related to dams and dam safety.
• Prior to joining the staff at the Water Resources Department in Salem, John worked for Clark County Public Works in Vancouver, Washington and consulting firms in Oregon, Utah and Kansas.
• John is a licensed professional engineer in Oregon, Washington and Utah and serves as Oregon’s representative to the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO).  He obtained his Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University, and his undergraduate from the Colorado School of Mines.

Rhine Messmer, Program Manager, Recreational Fisheries, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife

• Rhine is currently the Recreational Fisheries Program Manager for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.  The Recreational Fisheries Program is a program within ODFW’s Fish Division that is responsible for providing policy oversight and management direction for management of Oregon’s inland trout, warmwater gamefish, salmon and steelhead fisheries (not including the Columbia River).  One of the duties of the Program Manager is oversight and implementation of ODFW’s Fish Transportation Permits.  Other key duties include development of Oregon’s angling regulations, supervision of Program Coordinators for the Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) and the Restoration and Enhancement Program (R&E), supervision of ODFW’s Recreational Fishery Biometrician, oversight of Oregon’s Sport Fish Restoration Program, coordination and chairing ODFW’s Warmwater Working Group, and various other duties as assigned.

Bernard “Bernie” M. Kepshire, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Fish Screening and Passage Program

• Bernie has spent the last 14 years with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Fish Screening and Passage Program.  He currently serves as Fish Screening State Coordinator.  Fish screens protect fish from being diverted from natural waters into ditches, ponds and pumps.
• Bernie has more than 10 years of experience in the aquaculture of salmonids, catfish, tilapia and aquarium fish including pond culture and management.  This experience was gained in the private sector and with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
• Bernie also has experience with consulting and seafood marketing.  He is currently active in several fish conservation and sport fishing organizations.

Hobart Manns

• Hobart is an Oregon native and his family dates back to 1870 in the lower Columbia River area. He worked in the forest as a teenager and has fished over most of the streams and lakes in Oregon.
• He has been involved in the fishing industry for over 25 years and has been host of a radio program broadcast in the Portland area for the past 18 years. He has been outdoor writer for the Freshwater News for 16 years, and has been the Subaru outdoor person, "The Outback Angler" for more than 10 years. He has hosted Northwest Outdoors for Washington public television for six seasons.
• In addition to his fishing pursuits in Oregon, Hobart has traveled and fished over a great deal of Alaska and British Columbia and notes his first love in fishing is catching a crappie or bluegill.

Kin Daily, Certified Fisheries Biologist, Ecological Services, Inc.

• Kin Daily is a certified fishery biologist with Ecological Services, Inc., a company which provides consulting services to government agencies, private companies or groups, and individuals on matters related to fish and wildlife protection, enhancement, and management. One of Kin's specialties is providing management assistance to pond owners. Prior to taking this position, Kin worked 30 years as a fishery biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, including 16 years as the warmwater fish management specialist for western Oregon. Kin resides in Bay City, Oregon with his wife Jody.

Laura Tesler, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife

• Laura Tesler works for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in Salem and has been involved in the fisheries field since 1991. In her current capacity at ODFW, Laura is the Coordinator for the Fish Restoration and Enhancement Program, a program that enhances angling opportunities across Oregon by distribution of grant funds.  Laura also manages the Grass Carp Stocking program for Oregon. Laura graduated from Oregon State University with a B.S. in Fisheries Science in 1996.  Originally hailing from Michigan, Laura grew up fishing for bass, walleye, pike, brook trout, muskellunge, perch, and many varieties of “panfish”.   Laura is involved with the American Fisheries Society- Oregon chapter (Vice President), the North American Native Fish Association, NW Steelheaders, Trout Unlimited, and Oregon Trout.  Laura’s new passion is learning to fly fish for trout and tying flies to bring them in.

Mary Pfauth, Research Associate, PSU Center for Lakes and Reservoirs

• Mary Pfauth received her PhD from Portland State University in 2001 through the Environmental Sciences and Resources Program.  Her dissertation research focused on the reproductive biology of Salicornia virginica (pickleweed) - a dominant plant in the coastal salt marshes of the west coast.  She has been a research associate at the PSU Center for Lakes and Reservoirs since 2002 where she works on aquatic invasive species.

David E. Williams, State Director, Oregon Wildlife Services

• Dave is a Certified Wildlife Biologist through the Wildlife Society, and has a B.S. in Wildlife Sciences, 1978, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN.
• Dave has worked in natural resource management for the past 26 years as an employee for the National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's- Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)- Wildlife Services program.  Assignments have been in the States of Florida, Indiana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Oregon.
• For the past 21 years as a wildlife biologist, Dave has developed expertise in resolving wildlife/human conflicts caused by avian and mammalian species in a diversity of situations such as but not limited to: predation on livestock, bear damage to timber, wildlife strikes with aircraft, beaver flooding roadways and crops and bird damage to aquaculture operations.
• Dave has been the State Director for the Oregon Wildlife Services program since 1997.
• Annie Dunn-Beadle, Hughes Water Gardens
• Annie pursued continuing education in horticulture and liberal arts at Clackamas Community College.  She has worked for Hughes Water Gardens for seven years as sales associate in retail and wholesale water gardening. 
• Annie is primarily a construction and design educator in the areas of small water features and aquatic plantings.  Her knowledge and expertise has been shared as keynote speaker for tri-county garden clubs in the Portland metropolitan area.  She has presented to members of the Association of Landscape Designers and Master Gardeners and is an educational presenter on container water gardening at the Berry Botanic Garden, Portland OR.

Jim Nelson, The Pond Doctor

• I am an Oregon native. I received a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in pathogenic microbiology at Oregon State University. My specialty is preventative medicine for the control of disease in fishes.
